Description
Clean up your engine bay! Manual transmission NDs come with a "sound tube", designed to transfer intake noise to the interior of the car. It's a bit of a goofy deal for a lightweight sports car. And you just know some of those hard plastic parts are eventually going to get brittle and break on you, which will cause a check engine light and the potential for foreign object damage in your engine.
Delete it with this simple kit! Insert the 6061-T6 aluminum adapter into the intake tube and attach the valve cover vent. Pop the plastic cap into the hole left in the firewall. Enjoy a 1 lb weight savings and a cleaner area underhood!

I encourage you to get this delete kit, as it makes the engine bay cleaner, and gets rid of the stupid sound tube......
...BUT!!! Keep that sound tube and all it's hardware!!!! You'll thank me if, your smog shop is a stickler for CARB regulations.
I went round and round with the "technician" (why don't they call themselves mechanics any more), explaining in detail that the delete kit, and the factory sound tube, BOTH have the valve cover vent hose, that injects oil vapors back into the throttle body. Didn't matter, because the "emissions were modified", and failed testing for that.
Went home, pulled the Verus kit off, plugged the sound tube back in, and simply laid the entire sound tube assembly on the engine, and went back to the shop.....
....the ND passed smog.
Sorry to hear you experienced issues with the emissions techs! This is really surprising, and not something that we think needs an EO. Still, we're investigating with CARB, and we'll update things on our end accordingly. Thanks for keeping us in the loop!
There is a lot of ignorant debate about the effect of removing the sound tube. I used an uncalibrated phone app sound spectrum analyzer. This showed no difference in mean dB sound pressure with its removal.
BUT what is being done with this is to remove a bass flute (the tube) from the noisy orchestra (everything else), so that there is less bass noise fed into the cockpit. This is noticeable if one understands what to listen for; and the engine noise above about 3000 rpm obscures this change. But in 6th gear, that's all apeeds below about 70 mph.
I like the change; and philosophically removing something that does not contribute to performance feels like a minor purification rite.
Slight reduction in higher pitch induction noises from the engine bay. Clean look and easy install.
Wait, I can remove weight and reduce noise? Take my money!
Also, I stalled my engine today because it was so quiet I couldn't hear it over the stereo. Doh!

I love the MX-5 convertible I bought last month. But when I read about an installed sound tube, I know what they did but what were they thinking? It was a faster decision to buy the delete kit than it was to install it and that was pretty durn quick.
