Hush-O-Matic exhaust for ND

The business end of the active exhaust.
Hush-O-Matic exhaust for ND
Loud when you want it, quiet when you don't.

Made in the USA

Exclusive to Flyin' Miata

Availability: In stock

The problem with exhaust systems is that they're either loud or quiet. And sometimes you want one and not the other. Meet the first active exhaust for the Miata! They're popping up on high end cars all over the place.

At idle and light throttle, the exhaust stream is routed through an effective muffler that keeps the sound levels low. Very comfortable and neighbourhood-friendly.

But when you dip deeper into the throttle pedal, a butterfly opens to allow the exhaust to bypass the muffler completely. This cuts down on restriction and you can hear the car respond to your extra enthusiasm. When you want it loud, it's loud. Never obnoxiously so, but sporty.

We also have a CAN integration package that allows you to change the behavior of the exhaust on the fly by simply twisting a dial. You can change from always loud to always quiet or set the percentage of throttle needed to open the bypass.

The butterfly mechanism is an OE-quality part with a very long lifespan. As with all of our exhausts, this system carries a lifetime warranty for the original owner on the mechanical parts.

We cannot give a specific decibel rating for this exhaust, as that depends on the measuring technique as well as other modifications on the car. If you are competing in a noise-sensitive facility and are having trouble with noise levels, it's possible to change the muffler over to the "always quiet" mode quickly and easily. That will drop sound levels to just a bit over the stock muffler.

*Due to the design and operation of the butterfly valve used in the Hush-O-Matic muffler, the valve may experience a slight vibrational noise at the point of closure. This typically happens when applying a light throttle, however in most cases the there is little to no noticeable effects. The CAN control system eliminates the chance of this noise.

The Hush O Matic is a must!
Just received my flying Miata exhaust today. With only 420 miles on the car, LOL. The only thing the car was lacking was a decent exhaust. Flying Miatas, Hush O Matic fit the bill. From carefully shipping, to the fit, the finish, most importantly the sound! More of a European sound, as opposed of sounding like a tuner car. The only thing missing is the flying Miata logo on the tips. What gives? I want to brag!

Quality product a great sound
The exhaust note is exactly what I was hoping for. I had it installed together with the Flying Miata mid pipe and the sound is perfect for a street car.

Best upgrade ever
I recently imported the Hush-O-Matic to Europe, the Netherlands. My local garage company installed the exhaust, I had the control via the windscreen wiper installed by an audio specialist. I have a 1.5 and Flyin Miata could not tell me with certainty that the exhaust and operation would work well with that. Meanwhile I can report that it works smoothly; what a great system! Boy, I really love it. Quit in the village and great bass sound on open roads. I already loved my MX5, but now I am in love with it, keep driving all day.

Buy it
This thing is great. Properly engineered and well crafted. I’ve got it on my 2019 GTS, very nice exhaust note. Much deeper at low throttle and gets borderline demonic @ redline.

Get your crap together on the instructions. You put a lot of work into R&D to get this muffler perfect. Do the same with the directions .
Had it installed by my local Mazda dealer today. First off, you folks need to get it together, in terms of instructions. If a journeyman mechanic cant clearly understand your directions, then you need to get that sorted out.
As far as the muffler goes. Damn! The car really should have come with this. Quiet, and I mean damned quiet at highway speeds. Holy crap quiet. But when you want it to have a personality, it sounds awesome. No drone, ever. Sounds sweet and easy to operate.

Do it!
I purchased this along with the mid-pipe. Easy to install and beautifully made. The exhaust tone is intoxicating and leaves me grinning from ear to ear when the bypass valve opens up. The first few weeks my gas mileage went down because I couldn’t stop myself from driving wide open throttle just to listen to it. It also sounds better than stock (and very subtle) when the valve is closed and the FM muffler is in effect. Highly recommend.

Junk. Not worth the price. Lasted a year. Warranty is a joke.
Had this exhaust a year. Go for inspection and find out 2 of the welded seams are splitting. Their "warranty" requires that I ship it to them for repair and ship it back to myself, both at my expense, PLUS the expense of having it removed and reinstalled. It lasted just over a year before it failed. I just replaced it with a GWR RoadsterSport and not only is it made better, it SOUNDS so much better. The HushOMatic I JUNK.

Note from FM: GWR RoadsterSport exhausts are made in the same factory and carry the same warranty as Flyin' Miata exhausts. Macrog75, please contact us.

Adds to the fun
The Hush exhaust brings a welcome resonance that is lost to the OEM unit. A bland rush of air becomes a declarative tone while avoiding the off-pitch 'blatt' Borla offers as a way to sell a sound no race car actually makes. Today's engines are incapable of the crisp rasp Abarth units brought to Triumphs and Healys in the fifties and sixties. This unit kindles those memories without giving the MX5 a deep bellow; more so than the OEM-permitted 'chuff,' the result is in character with a car that continues the spirit.

Exactly What I was Looking For
This exhaust was pretty easy to install and came packaged very well. I've had it on for about 800 miles now, and I couldn't be more pleased with it. It's loud when I want it to be and quiet when I pass by the California Highway Patrol. On the freeway I can barely hear the exhaust. Downshift a gear or three and it really wakes up, especially with the top down. The best part is that my friends can actually hear my car now :)

Looks Great, Sounds Great
This exhaust is exactly what I was looking for! On the freeway/while cruising the sound is barely noticeable. When you want to hear it, it's louder, deeper, and has no drone. Would highly recommend.

Exactly the visibility and exactly the sound I was looking for.
I've been traveling with this exhaust for a month and I love it very much. The quality is very good, installation was easy and the result, very beautiful. The exhaust looks good and sounds even better. I decide what I want, quiet sound or loud and strong, perfect! For two years I drive on an stock exhaust and now, it is like a celebration. I invited it without knowing how he sounded in reality and I am really pleased with the result. Sorry for my bad English ..

Great sound, beautiful construction, happy driver.
I installed my HoM this morning and have been driving all day. I absolutely love it.

The install was straight-forward and easily completed by a novice mechanic with no help. Some co-ordination required to remove and install the exhaust without an extra set of hands, but the whole thing took me less than an hour.

The trickiest part of the install is definitely removing and replacing the vacuum line on the barb that comes out of the back of the engine. It is in a tight spot, so small hands definitely help. I don't have small hands, so I found removing the brace helps, as does swearing under your breath.

This exhaust makes the car sound as good as it looks. A touch deeper at idle and when noodling through my subdivision, but it wakes right up when I go past about 20% throttle. Bassier, no drone, louder without being offensive, and a nice burble when I let off the gas. Super happy with this -- I took a chance, buying without hearing it on a similar car, and I'm glad I did.

It's like having two mufflers from "that other guy".
Two mufflers in one...or actually three now that I have a version of the future CAN-BUS integration through the variable intermittent windshield wiper switch installed (occurred at the 2017 Summer Camp event).

My muffler now runs from quiet, through three modes of active, to full-loud based on the five wiper settings. Awesome.

Fit, finish, and quality is all up to the usual FM standard. A must-do for those that like having a Jekyll & Hyde attitude.

You get what you pay for
Sounds great, excellent instructions, top quality. I installed the muffler and control myself in a day. Not a quick task but very straight-forward. The results are pretty much perfect. I have a long-tube header setup (but also tried muffler with a standard-length header) and I'm convinced this is one of the few options out there that can offer performance and sound quality on a header setup (I tried other mufflers). In both cases, the sound is tamed and is pretty much perfect. It's reasonably quiet when you want it to be and has a nice, progressive, deep sound as you get into it. I recommend using this with a LT header, or standard length header with the stock mid-pipe. Add an aftermarket mid-pipe and it will be too loud for most people. I couldn't be happier and wished I had started with this one!

Perfect Exhaust Note
Perfect exhaust note! It's exactly the sound I was looking for. Mellow and deep without any rasp or harshness. This muffler is the way to wake the ND up without offending the neighbors.

The install was easy enough even though I wound up not able to reuse the stock studs. The nuts were on so tight that even with a vice they wouldn't come off -- the stud and the vice just kept tearing up. New studs were easy to find at ace and it allowed me to get the parts tightened appropriately much easier. (Friendly suggestion to FM to include new studs and nuts just to make this whole thing easier)

There's very little instruction on running the vac hose, but it was super easy.

This is my second FM part (I also got the sways), and I couldn't be happier.

4 Thumbs Up
The exhaust is fantastic. I was concerned it would not be louder at all but it was exactly what I'd hoped for. Under idle or no load it is slightly louder making it easy to carry on a conversation with or without the top down. Under load it sounds awesome. Not tin can awesome but enhanced factory sound awesome. The tips also look great. Installation was simple and easy. I wish I could say the same, however, for the remote control. There was one more clip that needed undone for the fuseblock than detailed in the instructions which caused me to damage the hidden extra one. It appeared I received a pre-production version from what I could tell as the wire connectors supplied were not the same gauge wire as the wires being spliced in. The photo of the parts were also not exactly the same leading me to believe this was done before the final product was completed. Looking at the wiring inside the fuseblock that needed cut and spliced and the mis-matching instructions, I was not confident in quessing this version was correct and was not going to risk damaging the electrical on a brand new car. Exhaust yes! Remote no.

Note from Flyin' Miata: thanks to this feedback, we will be revisiting the instructions.

Installation of muffler and electronic control went well. The mechanical side was easy. If you are not comfortable with small wiring in a tight place (bottom of underhood fuse box), have a trusted competent person assist you. The results are great!
I purchased the muffler and the electronic control. The muffler installed easily and fits perfectly. The electronic control was a bit tricky to connect the wiring under the fuse box. However, being careful and not rushing was the key to my successful installation.
The result is outstanding! The Flyin' Miata video can't duplicate how nice the car sounds. In the quiet mode the sound is just slightly louder than stock. Just the right volume for a true sports car with a quiet idle and NO drumming sound at freeway speeds. In the active mode, the sound has a deep, throaty note that sounds so nice, especially on a twisty uphill with lots of gear changes. This is Miata number 8 for me. All generations, from street to track day prepared and this is the best sound I have experienced!
