A Flyin' Miata exclusive!

We know that Miata owners are always looking for ways to shed weight. Autocrossers in particular. After seeing a custom minimum weight brake system on Bill Schenker's National level CSP car, we figured we could come up with something for everyone. So we knocked 4 lbs of unsprung weight off each front wheel by replacing the stock cast iron calipers with aluminum Wilwood parts. Along with the weight loss, we also ended up with a four-piston caliper for nice even pad pressure. And yes, we said 4 pounds of weight per corner.

Weight note: The drop in weight quoted here assumes that you're sticking with the same diameter rotors that you currently have. If you go up to a larger rotor size, the weight savings won't be as significant due to the increased rotor mass.

The aluminum radial mount Powerlite caliper is a fairly new design from Wilwood that's an excellent match to a quick Miata. It's compact enough to fit around the small Miata discs, but is nice and stiff and gives even pressure across the 5 square inch pad. Since the pistons are properly sized, the stock pedal feel will not change. Porterfield, Hawk, Carbotech, Performance Friction and Wilwood all offer a full range of pads to choose from. We ship them with a set of Wilwood BP-20X compound pads, which are a good street/autocross choice. Brake balance will not be dramatically affected unless you install a different pad type than your previous setup. Please note that you will have to use a pad for a Wilwood Powerlite caliper, standard Miata pads will not fit. We're not able to remove the pads from this kit.

These are not intended to be super heavy duty track brakes. For that, we recommend our four wheel big brake kit with the heavier Dynapro calipers and two-piece rotors. These are a good street, autocross and light track option. They have better heat management than stock brakes due to the aluminum caliper, but rampaging V8s on slicks will want more.

Available to fit any 1994-05 stock Miata brake rotor. However, there's a catch. On the smaller 10" rotors, the caliper sits very close (radially) to the wheel mounting surface. You will have to check clearance, using the templates below, on your wheels to confirm the caliper will clear.  The 10" rotor setup fits almost all factory wheels after 1994 - yes, including 14" ones - as well as popular aftermarket ones, but use the template to be sure. 11" (actually 10.6", we round for simplicity's sake) should work with almost anything.

1994-02 template (10" rotor)
2001-05 Sport template (11" rotor)

We have discovered some 11" rotors are too thick. The FM branded rotors we sell fit fine, but please measure your rotors before ordering, they cannot exceed 22.1 mm.

These calipers are hard-anodized to make the coating very durable and resistant to changes due to temperature. This hard-anodizing means that there's no dye, which means that the exact shade can vary. It's important to note that the shades of grey will likely not match perfectly. We can't accept returns due to mismatched caliper colors. If you'd like your calipers to match perfectly, please choose one of our big brake kits in red powder coat.

Includes calipers, pads, brackets and stainless steel lines. Rotors are not included. You will keep your existing rotor. If you're changing rotor size, you'll need to pick up a set of the appropriate rotors as well. This is a two-wheel kit, nothing is changed at the rear. We do offer a four wheel version that includes new pads and lines for the rear as well as a proportioning valve.

Great Value but I'd Spring for the Big-Big Kit

This kit is amazing whoa for your dollar, vs. stock brakes (I have an 04 /NB2). But for boosted cars that see a bit of track time, they can feel a little inadequate after a few times hauling it down coming off a main straight. With hindsight, I think I would have spent the money on the bigger Wilwood kit - but again I can't complain in terms of value.

Very good brake kit

Although a small brake kit, it works extremely well on my 92 NA6! There is plenty of braking force to the point the inspection personnel was shocked.

Setup:
- Wilwood Small Big Brake Kit (Front Only)
- 2001-2005 Sport high performance brake rotors (Front) 11"
- 15x7 +35 Enkei RPF1

Those on Enkei RPF1 15x7 +35, you can safely upgrade to this brake setup!

Well Worth It

Significant improvement in brake feel. I also chose to redo rear brakes ( rotors, pads, and lines. stock calipers ). I really love how you can feel the brakes -- it just makes you feel more connected to the car. I wish I did this upgrade right after I bought my car! Well worth it!

It's super easy on an NB. Well worth every penny.

The install was super easy and straight forward. I did have to chop a very small part of my backing plate/vent to get the bracket to fit. My only hint would be to only do one side at at time. It was confusing for me to figure out (at first) how to orient the brackets to mount the caliper. The lettering goes to the inside. Keep that in mind, because the picture in the directions shows the rotor/bracket separate from the car. Good combination with slotted rotors. No need to worry about them being to thick. Stopping power once they were bedded in was far superior and more consistent than stock. Very pleased over all.

Some extra hints

Probably a good product but I had some issues with installation. Here are some things I can pass on to others. May not apply to anyone else and maybe others are better at this than I am, but here you go.

For an early NA, mine is a 93, be prepared for a few things.
Read all the instructions first and make sure you have thread sealer, red lock tight, tin snips and a grinder available before you start the project.
Most likely you will need a spacer so the wheels dont rub the caliper, which probably means you need new wheel studs. The ARP studs are really long so if you have the capped lug nuts they wont work.
When you put the wheel studs in, you will need to take the calipers back off again so test fit it before using the lock tight.
When you test fit the caliper onto the adapter note that the longer bolts go into the smaller side of the adapter and the shorter bolts into the thicker side of the adapter.

I found the instructions to be lacking a bit and a few more bits of explanation would have really saved me a lot of frustration. Maybe Im the only one that has this issue.
