- One Of The Most Effective Chassis Braces Available
These fender braces by Paco Motorsports have been on my todo list for quite some time now. One of my biggest gripes with my 2001 NB2 Miata was the uncomfortable cowl shake and unnerving flexiness of the front when taking tight corners or hitting potholes. Installation wasn’t a breeze and took some work but it’s definitely not impossible for an amateur wrencher to do in a day or two.
Driving right out of my driveway I immediately noticed the immense rigidity of these braces, normally I’d wince backing out over the rain gutter but now I don’t even notice any significant chassis flex anymore up front. Taking it around town I also noticed there was noticeably less engine twisting upon acceleration and overall felt like it was sending more torque to the wheels instead of flexing around the engine bay. NVH is a mixed bag with these braces, on one hand they do increase the intensity and harshness of irregularities in the road, however the front is much more composed on rough road and the interior doesn’t rattle nearly as much anymore. Steering response has become almost instant as the front end no longer loads up. You can really feel the stability going through tight sweepers and hairpins. In general these braces seem to induce slightly more oversteer and throttle inputs have more effect getting the rear to come out. It’s almost a night and day difference.
- An upgrade that made a measurable improvement in handling and suspension performance.
This was the last brace added to a complete overhaul of the suspension and a full compliment of the other Flyin Miata braces. I was unsure whether to try these as the other braces had made such a major difference at that point. But the fenders were coming off so I decided to give them a try. I was surprised how much they firmed up the front of the Miata. Our roads are particularly bad after last winter and the suspension is working hard. The strong arms seemed to transfer the forces better to the car structure and eliminated rattling and flexing I previously had in the front. A huge improvement to my 144k Miata.
- Awesome!!! Immediate Difference
Had my body shop put a set of the Strong Arms on my 91 NA, Ginya, yesterday.
Chassis has ~345,000 miles (original owner). Could actually feel the difference as soon as I sat in the car.
On the road, there was no more slop in the front end, handling was greatly improved, and no more 65 mph vibration.
I have FM's other braces--strut bar, frame rails, Cannon brace, but none of these made such a dramatic difference when installed.

- Definitely Worth the Work
I have a 200K mi '92 NA that I have been driving for 16 years. I have added quite a few braces over the years and I finally got around to adding these. They really help calm down the front end around hard washboard corners. I was able to tighten up the preload and add a little more rebound dampening and still there is less of the roughness translated through the steering wheel. I did require a little of balancing of the oversteer.
Lot of work, not much of an improvement. Seems a little stiffer and takes bumps a little better. Not sure it is worth it.
- My New Favorite Structural Mod
I have been wanting to get fender braces for my NB for quite some time, but I wasn’t that impressed when comparing the available options for my car. I mean, why would someone build a brace designed to stiffen the frame horns without extending them far enough to tie in the front suspension mounting points? It seemed like an obvious design flaw to me, so when I saw FM advertise their new strong arms and I saw just how much sheet metal it tied together (a lot!), I knew I had to have a set.
I was too excited to wait for a powdercoated set to become available so I bought a set in bare steel and hosed them down with a layer of undercoating spray. After bolting them in I thought I’d have to adjust my doors, but they opened and closed just like they used too. My Delrin door bushings have zero play, so I’m guessing they maintained my door alignment throughout the install. Nice! The install took me about five hours total.
First impressions? I live in SoCal and the roads here are pretty good, but there is an onramp I use a lot that has a sharp 90 degree turn right before it merges with traffic that has a string of potholes at the apex. The front of the car used to shimmy around and generally make a fuss every time I entered that portion of the turn. Now all I feel is a string of solid thumps. As nice as that is, I didn’t buy these for the reduction in NVH, so I was pleased at what they did for my steering feel. My suspension is set up to understeer a bit at the limit, and without the strong arms, the limit was always a bit hard to nail down accurately. With the strong arms installed, I could feel through the steering wheel the exact point when the front tires were giving up grip and dial it back just a tad.
All in all, I’m thrilled with how well these work. A definite win for FM!
