- Little bass boom for some character
I didn't want much: the stock exhaust note is definitely bland, and I just wanted to give it some character. This definitely did it for me. Not noisy or raspy. A growl so low you can't hear it at highway speeds for the most part. But it's a very satisfying auditory feedback zipping around town that (mostly) only you can hear :).
Had a bit of a problem aligning the riveted bolts of the stock midpipe through the aluminum press sheet coupler thing as the two holes were slightly too small. Dremelled them a little larger and all went well.
Was considering getting the midpipe in case this was not loud enough for me, but I like it just where it is. Love the little FM logo on the chrome tips-- a nice flashy flair off of my bumper.
Out of all the exhausts avail for the NB, I want to say this is probably the most "mature"-sounding of what I've looked at.
- Sound great to all ages.
Want something louder than stock? But dont want a Rice cannon? This is the muffler for you. On startup it has a nice tone, it emits an ora of resonance. But without a terrible drone, as it warms up it let out a beautiful tuned note. Still has plenty of volume so your friends car hear you pulling away, I've received compliments from my neighbors on how nice it sounds( they are elders and dont care for my trucks exhaust at all) as well as my best friend who is a huge Honda Fartcan fanboy was blown away at the tone. The welds all look fantastic, the fitment was perfect and installing this muffler and the flyin miata midpipe setup took under 30 minutes. You want quality, look no further. You want great sound but want to be able to hold a conversation while crusing and listen to the wonderful pops as you row thru the gears? This is the Exhaust for you.
- 30 minutes with a hoist, no torch required
I bought both the muffler and the cat/resonator. Packed well, all parts accounted for, including a pipe clamp for the cat/resonator connection.
This set up was my last poke at a solution to a nagging stumble and backfire on startup problem. Without going into the number of parts I replaced first, suffice to say the problem is gone. Fires up without a hitch.
Took the system to a friend's garage, because there was no way I was going to do this on my back (and maybe torching off a few bolts).
I thought I had every weird tool offered for sale in my box, but my pal Mike had this goofy-looking pair of pliers that popped the hangers on and off the old/new system. Who knew?
The system bolted up perfectly. And the sound? It's really not quiet, but not loud as I expected. It's just a solid sound that doesn't snort like a "fart can". It's really an enjoyable note.
Is it getting more power? My butt dyno says "yes", but it's hard to tell as the car already had an aftermarket, K&N filtered intake. But I like the result, and strangely enough, it idles silently.
I'm happy with the set up. This is on a 2000 LE with 44,000 miles. The most painless $800.00+ I've spent in a long time.
I bought the muffler and midpipe setup for my totally stock 1999 miata. This setup is QUIET. If you are expecting to get really throaty tones or volume whatsoever without headers, look elsewhere! It gives it some tone, but almost NO volume. NOT. a loud setup. not even a medium setup. a very quiet setup.
- Great Throaty Growl
Bought this along with the cat+midpipe package, I'm waiting till the headers come back in stock. The car definitely breathes more easily and sounds great. I don't know if it's the muffler or the cat/midpipe (likely a combo of both), but the car sounds a LOT meaner than before, through all the rev range. Puts up a great roar higher rpms, seems to slack a bit between 2.5k and 3.8k. (It's so hard not to floor it up to 6.5k rpm on the straights now cause it sounds so good up there, though!) My only sound-related complaint is that it has a great deep bassy drone under 2.5k rpm with the top down. It's not as bad when you're outside of the cabin, but when you're in there and need to prowl at low rpm, better put the top up unless you want subwoofer in your ear. Again, this could be because of the cat/midpipe with stock headers. Dunno. Still, it IS kinda fun having that low boom. Hope I don't get a ticket :P
Install and Packaging: I was really impressed with the packaging. Moulded foam pieces and all. Shiny as chrome out of the box. It fits perfectly with the FM midpipe's end, can't say about stock. And it fits PERFECTLY in the nook in the bumper! Like, RIGHT THERE! It doesn't stick out obnoxiously, either. Great, great fit.
So, good sound (just loud cabin at low rpm), good fit and install. Absolutely no regret purchasing.
I was amazaed at the quality of the compenents, particulary the welds. Installatin was about half hour job, including chaing all 4 hangesres with polyurethane hangesrs. The big suprise, is that the tail pipe exited exactly at the opeing in the body. PERFECT. The second big suprise is that the sound is in the lower register so it won't give you a headache or a ticket. Doesn't sound like those rice mills that are front wheel drive and sound like a bag of angry bees. This an A+ product and would recommend it, with the poly hangers to anyone with a MX-5. Fast delivery too.
- Quality product as usual
Already had the racing beat header so I just needed to order the muffler and midpipe. Sounds so good, Highly recommend getting the full FM exhaust. Def feel a power difference in my 99
