The Mazdaspeed MX-5 (or MSM) is a good platform for modification. But eventually, the limitation becomes the stock turbo. We tried modifying the turbochargers but were not able to get the consistent results we needed. On top of this, stock MSM turbos have been known to fail. So, what to do?

Meet the Garrett conversion kit. This allows you to install a very reliable, nicely sized turbo into the MSM. The exhaust manifold is designed for good flow and moves the turbo higher up for more available space. This space is put to good use by the turbine outlet casting, which keeps the turbine and wastegate outlets separated for the best flow. The stainless steel downpipe mates to the MSM exhaust. Meanwhile, the intake piping is very open with a cold air box while the piping to the intercooler is replaced with our large-bore silicone tubing with fewer bends than stock. It's all good stuff.

Dyno run of a Mazdaspeed with the Garrett conversion, a Hydra, FM intercooler and FM exhaust. The car's on 93 octane pump gas. Now, this is an exceptional case, but how's that for a power jump? More typical results would be about 260 rwhp.

Depending on how you configure the kit, you can either use it to upgrade a car with the Big or Little Enchilada with a Garrett turbo, or you can start with a stock MSM and basically install a Stage 1 turbosystem using the standard MSM engine management.

Note that the downpipe is specific to the MSM and includes a catalytic converter.

The kit does not include any engine management. It`s intended as an upgrade for a car already equipped with a standalone ECU, although it will run at lower boost on a stock ECU if an O2 signal modifier is used. The new washer bottle is because the new turbo goes where the original washer bottle was.

If you're planning to run this kit with the FM reroute, please contact us before ordering.

We have a series of videos on how to install the non-MSM Stage 1 turbo kit, which is very similar. Note, it's fairly in-depth so make sure you have your popcorn and comfy chair handy.
