Miatas have always looked a little goofy with front license plates, and the ND is no exception. It's kinda like a big buck tooth. Plus you need to put holes in your bumper to mount it, so even if you take it off the holes remain.

Luckily, there's an easy alternative. The Cravenspeed Platypus mount screws into the tow hook receptacle that's hidden behind a cover in the bumper. Unlike universal mounts, the Cravenspeed is designed so you can reinstall the cover. This makes for a super-clean look instead of a hole.

There's even a quick release fitting on the plate itself along with an included wrench. This lets you pop it off for cleaning or if you're in a situation where you don't want your plate caught on camera - such as at an autocross or track day. The remaining mount is almost invisible, so it's also suitable for photo sessions. The mounting stud that screws into the car requires a wrench to install and it will not loosen up accidentally.

There are generic kits on the market that will do similar things, but they don't have the quick release option and they leave that big ugly hole in your bumper. They also have to be over-adjustable to fit as many cars as possible, which means they're more likely to loosen off or sit badly. This mount is designed specifically for the ND Miata.

Comes with 5/16" long screws, which will mount a bare plate just fine. If you want a plate frame or cover, you will need longer screws. Why doesn't it come with long screws? Because that minimizes the chance of bumper scratches.

Not compatible with aftermarket mesh grilles. While we don't know of any legal problems running an offset plate, we do recommend you confirm with your local authorities.

Works fine and looks good

Took me a quick look at the instructions on the webpage to figure out how it went together. But, once I had it figured out it was all of 5 minutes or so to install. I like the fact that I don't have to drill holes in my new car to mount the plate.
