My latches were worn so I thought I would try these out. Little pricey but for the piece of mind to me its worth it. Install was easy enough took about 5 min each. The springs are the tricky part. My latches now make a noice click.
I tried repairing the originals and it was better for a while. I was going to drill and tap screws in the originals but decide $65 for an appearance upgrade that will provide a 100% increase in peace of mind and safety was a better idea. (Did not like imagining the top being ripped open at speed on the highway!) The red ones look fantastic on my red NA! It was nice that everything came with the kit. Easy to do.
Came in today and the install went easy. The first one probably took me 5 minutes the second one took me 30 minutes until I got an extra hand to move the spring around. For anyone whose gonna install these get an extra hand to make it easier to move the spring around. Also would recommend adjusting the screw once it’s in the car. I adjusted outside the car and was way off.
Definitely more than I'd like to spend with how little of a piece these are but I understand RnD must have played into it. Definitely recommend! Good pieces adjustable screw is nice too for the future. Very happy with how these latch now. Would also recommend watching the YouTube install video.
Tired of your top latches popping open?
These are an absolutely must have, my Miatas factory top latches had worn out. Every bump in the road caused then to pop open. Definitely not something you want to happen, especially at speed. I replaced them with these and adjusted the supplied screws to keep them snuggly in place. I haven't had any problems since. And they look fantastic!
Top Quality - Exactly what I expected
The summary pretty much says it all. I have seen DIY solutions that work, but they don't return to latch to OEM spec. And they tend to be more like the "permanent" solution in the kit. My right-side latch would slowly move toward "unlatched" over 30 to 40 minutes of driving. I definitely had to do something!
I would also like to highly recommend you watch the support video on FM's YouTube channel here -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oMgQ_nJYsAI&t=1s
The kit contains a few more parts than you ultimately need and Keith does a great job of explaining your options.
Finally, to address the comment(s) about price; FM's explanation (it may be in the video) is that these are billet aluminum and they don't do large enough runs to get the price down. Cutting the price in half WOULD be nice, but the extra money is worth it to me. This is an elegant solution that brings the latch back to new functionality.
A well designed, much needed product
Installed these on a set of front hardtop latches that would no longer lock in place. The kit includes set screws and an optional set of pan head screws that provide even more locking power. I used the pan head screws since the hardtop does not come off often. The factory latch had to be filed a bit to fit the pan head screws, but it’s a very solid lock now. No filing would have been needed for the standard set screws. This is a much cheaper alternative to buying new latches, and since it’s adjustable now they will never need to be replaced.
Purchased a set of top latches and caps. I have replaced the latch assembly twice in the past from Mazda. This is a lot cheaper and I believe of better quality. Install went smoothly (although it is not intuitive). Top is now tight and the latches have a solid "clack" when they snap into place.
Works great, the top does not rattle anymore.
Drivers side latch was adjusted as far as it would go, and my latches still rattled over rough road. Now after replacing the "locks" it is tight as a drum. Worth the money.
Well worth it!
I purchased a set of red top latch locks along with new top lock caps for my 2000 NB. They made a noticeable improvement and I highly recommend them.
A good solid and useful product
A much needed product. The installation was easy, both latches were done and reinstalled in 1/2 hour. The only problem was launching an E-Clip across the room, but FM had that covered with spare E-Clips in the kit. The support videos walk you through the installation step by step. The adjustable set screw will allow for wear and tear as time goes by as well. The only downside is the price, I'd like to see it a little less expensive.
