The 2005 Superfour Challenge car specification

Back to the Superfour Challenge page
Last time, we brought a pure street car to the Challenge. We're doing it again. Only this time, we're giving up a little low-end tractability for performance. We're keeping an eye on the bottom line. And we're putting loads of tire under the car.
Engine:
2002 Miata block with an FM stroker kit (custom crank, Carrillo rods, Wiseco pistons)
FM II turbo system with a Garrett 3071R turbocharger (it's as big as your head)
FM Mazdaspeed IC
FM headwork and port-matched intake manifold
oversize intake and exhaust valves
ARP studs for head and main bearings
stock cams
1 mm oversize intake and exhaust valves
FM aluminum radiator
Custom 3" exhaust
Notes: water and alcohol injection have been outlawed this year. The expected horsepower is around 350-400 at the wheels. The first dyno run was 323, but we ran higher boost and higher octane for the actual competition. We're using the intercooler we designed for the Mazdaspeed because it was already in the car and is an excellent unit. It also allows us to reuse some of the stock piping. Boost level was 15 psi in competition.
Drivetrain:
FM ACT clutch with stock flywheel
5-speed transmission
Notes: The 5-speed transmission combined with the stock Mazdaspeed 4.10 rear end gives us the ability to hit 66 mph in second gear. Top speed is overkill at 160+ mph, but going with lower gearing would hurt us in the sprint.
Electronics:
Hydra ECU
Suspension:
JIC Magic shocks and springs (approx. 550 lb/in F and 450 lb/in R)
FM front sway bar
FM big brakes
Brake master cylinder brace
16x7.5 SSR Competition wheels
245/45-16 Bridgestone S-03 tires
Notes: Yes, you read that tire size correctly. We're not going with little baby rubber this year. The car is going to stop.
Body:
A hardtop, thanks to Del Armstrong.
A "passenger mirror delete plate". The passenger mirror has been removed to decrease drag.
Interior:
A CG Lock. This little guy is great at turning a stock seatbelt into a quasi-harness.
The soft top has been removed.
