The 2003 Mazda show car
At the Houston auto show, photos by Chris Robertson
Mazda has come to Flyin' Miata when they needed
fast cars before. The Zoomster, the DGM Blazing
Miata, the Monterey Miata and
the DG Protege are the most recent
factory-backed showcars. They were all equipped with Flyin' Miata
parts, including turbos. So when it came time to build the latest car to make
the rounds of the import show circuit, the first thing Mazda did was ship the car
out to us. It's not often we take delivery of a car with only 250 miles on the
odometer and the window sticker still attached! It's fun driving a car with
manufacturer licence plates, too.
The first thing we did was slap
it on the dyno. Then pull the engine...

Just arrived, dirty from the drive over from Denver. This is a $26,000 car.
251 miles.
On to the dyno for a "before" run.
Andy pulls the engine.
Bill puts the new rods and 9.5:1 pistons in the block as Andy works on the suspension.
The head awaits.
It's nice to work on a fresh new engine. No slimy parts.
Andy finishes the turbo install as Ken installs suspension parts on the Submarine.
The final result.
Ken helps install the Hard Dog Extreme roll bar.
Back on the dyno.
Grrrr!
