FM butterfly brace (upgrade)
This will upgrade our frame rail reinforcement kit to a full butterfly brace. If you don`t already have the frame rails, you`re looking for the complete butterfly brace.
This ties both sides of the car together and "closes the box" for the transmission tunnel. This stiffens the car up noticeably and can make a tired 1990 Miata feel like a new 2005 model. Mazda knows it works, they added something similar themselves in 2001. When we were testing one of the prototypes, a passenger even noticed the difference in rigidity! Designed by FM and exclusive to us.
The brace is made of laser-cut stainless steel that is folded and stiffened with ribs on the back side. The center section is adjustable for height to clear almost any exhaust. We have tried to build in as much adjustment as possible, but due to the plethora of aftermarket exhaust configurations we cannot guarantee perfect clearance with every combination. Cars with a stock header will require some trimming to a factory heatshield. 1990-93 cars with stock header and catalytic converters will be a difficult install and may not fit. In most cases, ground clearance is not affected. The fuel lines and rear brake lines are tucked away and protected from impact. If the exhaust or transmission needs to be removed, the center section can be unbolted for full access. Designed to be used in conjunction with our frame rail reinforcement kit as shown in the photo below. This part number is for just the butterfly upgrade. The price for the complete setup with frame rails and the butterfly is $399.90
Fits all Miatas, although the 2001-02 cars with Sport bracing and all 2003-05 Miata and MX-5s are already equipped with something similar from the factory. Weighs 15 lbs, all below the CG of the car and well centered for the minimum effect on handling. Please note that the website will not calculate shipping correctly.
